The social dimension of sustainability - I am currently a PhD student in the School of Social Work at Portland State University. My area of specialty is the social dimension of sustainability. By now, most folks know about the concept of the 'triple bottom line': Economic, Environmental and Social. Applying this concept means that our actions should benefit each of these aspects - creating a win-win for people and the natural world, without compromising the other's future existence. Up to now, it seems to me as though the social bottom line has been neglected. I am seeking to learn more about how to draw attention to the social bottom line, what a healthy social bottom line looks like, how we can get there and how we can measure our progress towards that goal. Please contact me with any thoughts/ideas/references/questions. I'd love to talk with you!

Advice to a company that wants to implement clean & sustainable practices:
Sustainable practices involve a triple bottom line: Economic, Environmental and Social. Our efforts have the most impact when they benefit all three bottom lines - including the social one. While social sustainability can be a heady and rather amorphous concept, consider as a starting point the United Nations definition from their World Commission on Environment and Development: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." I'm actually interested in learning more about how this ideal can become a reality and what perspectives others have about this concept. Feel free to contact me!
